About the Ballet

Why it matters

The Nutcracker (1892) pairs luminous Tchaikovsky melodies with a fairy-tale world inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann. Premiered alongside Iolanta at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, it has since become a global favorite and a family classic.

The story (in a nutshell)

At a Christmas-eve party, young Clara receives a nutcracker that springs to life. After a battle with the Mouse King, Clara journeys through a snowy realm to the Kingdom of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy presides — a dreamlike celebration that ends as dawn breaks.

Musical highlights

Audience favorites include the Overture, March, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Russian Dance (Trepak), Arabian Dance, Chinese Dance, Dance of the Reed Flutes, and the Waltz of the Flowers.
