Often referred to as the “Crystal Aida”, this production is among the visually most striking interpretations of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera.

With monumental light installations, geometric stage design, and a deliberately reduced colour palette, Stefano Poda creates a modern, symbolic visual world.

The Production by Stefano Poda

The reinterpretation of Aida by Stefano Poda deliberately avoids traditional monumental historicism.

Instead, it focuses on an abstract, almost sculptural visual language.

Light, reflections, and crystalline structures shape the stage design and give the performance a modern, almost timeless aesthetic.

The production was created specifically for the Arena di Verona and uses the monumental architecture as a dramatic resonance space.

Story of Aida

At the centre of the opera is the Ethiopian princess Aida, who lives as a prisoner at the Egyptian court.

Caught between her love for Radamès and her loyalty to her father Amonasro, a conflict unfolds between personal emotion and political duty.

Giuseppe Verdi composed Aida in 1871 for the opera house in Cairo.

The work is one of the most powerful operas of the repertoire and gains exceptional dramatic intensity in the monumental open-air setting of the Arena di Verona.
