Story of Carmen
At the centre of the opera is Carmen, a fiercely independent woman who refuses to give up her freedom.
The soldier Don José falls deeply in love with her and abandons his former life to follow her. When Carmen turns instead to the celebrated bullfighter Escamillo, Don José becomes consumed by jealousy.
Georges Bizet’s Carmen was first performed in Paris in 1875.
With famous melodies including the Habanera, the Toreador Song and the Flower Song, it has become one of the most frequently performed operas in the world.
