Giordano’s tale of love and revenge

Fedora is an opera in three acts by Umberto Giordano, with a libretto by Arturo Colautti based on the play by Victorien Sardou.

Princess Fedora Romazov vows to uncover the truth behind the murder of her fiancé. Her suspicions fall upon Count Loris Ipanov, whom she follows from St Petersburg to Paris. As the truth gradually emerges, her determination for revenge gives way to love—with devastating consequences.

Giordano’s atmospheric score combines lyrical intimacy with the dramatic intensity of Italian verismo. Its best-known moment is Loris’s passionate aria “Amor ti vieta”, one of the composer’s most celebrated melodies.

First performed at the Teatro Lirico in Milan in 1898, Fedora remains one of Giordano’s most important operas alongside Andrea Chénier.
