Puccini’s Japanese tragedy
Madama Butterfly tells the story of Cio-Cio-San, a young geisha who marries the American naval officer B. F. Pinkerton. While Pinkerton regards the marriage as temporary, Cio-Cio-San believes completely in their future together and waits faithfully for his return.
Puccini contrasts moments of delicate intimacy with music of extraordinary dramatic power. The score includes Cio-Cio-San’s famous aria “Un bel dì vedremo”, the lyrical love duet “Vogliatemi bene” and the haunting Humming Chorus.
First performed at La Scala in Milan in 1904, Madama Butterfly has become one of the most frequently performed operas in the world. At Teatro La Fenice, Puccini’s deeply moving tragedy is presented in a production directed by Àlex Rigola.
