The Historic 1913 Production

Gianfranco de Bosio’s production celebrates the long connection between Aida and the Arena di Verona.

Inspired by the staging created for the Arena’s inaugural opera season in 1913, the production presents Verdi’s work in a traditional and monumental visual setting. Egyptian temples, ceremonial processions, chorus and ballet fill the immense stage of the amphitheatre.

The costumes draw inspiration from historic designs associated with the Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, while the direction closely follows Verdi’s original stage instructions. The result is a classical interpretation that combines historical detail with the extraordinary scale of the Arena.

The Roman amphitheatre becomes an integral part of the spectacle, particularly in the triumphal scenes for which Aida is famous.

Story of Aida

Aida is an Ethiopian princess living as a prisoner at the Egyptian court. She is secretly in love with the Egyptian commander Radamès, who returns her feelings.

Amneris, the daughter of the Pharaoh, is also in love with Radamès and becomes increasingly suspicious of Aida. When war breaks out between Egypt and Ethiopia, Aida is torn between her love for Radamès and her loyalty to her father and homeland.

After Radamès unwittingly reveals a military secret, he is accused of treason and condemned to be buried alive. Aida chooses to share his fate, and the two lovers face death together.

Giuseppe Verdi composed Aida in 1871. Combining intimate emotional drama with monumental choruses and ceremonial scenes, the opera is particularly suited to the vast open-air stage of the Arena di Verona.
